Just as with nuclear power, abortion, drug legalization, the EU, there's no left or right on immigration. It cuts across party lines. Though state propaganda reports a slight decrease in immigration opposition, it can safely be said that at least half the Swedish population takes a negative attitude.
Hence, one shouldn't be surprised that immigration critics take opposite views on popular culture. After all, some are socialists, some are nationalists, a lot of them conservatives, and some like me, libertarians (mostly).
Me for instance - - though an abortion critic - - is quite liberal when it comes to gays, though I'm not one myself. It probably has to do with a wish to be a consistent libertarian, but also with the music and the times when I was a young adult. David Bowie and Lou Reed have a lot to do with it. One forced oneself to become tolerant, because one liked their music.
Ergo, I think Withnail and I is a most enjoyable movie, despite some sexual ambivalence, or rather a-sexuality. The main characters are not gay; in fact one of them rejects the courting by one middle aged one, and the other, played by Richard Grant, is just plain alcoholic.
But there are qualities in the movie which I presume all true anglophiles and nostalgics will enjoy. Well, here's a chance to do it.
